MUMBAI
The City of Dreams - 100 Years from Now
Mumbai, a coastal city also known as India's city of dreams currently fosters the dreams of 20 million individuals. While the city is no stranger to calamities like floods, the recent predictions of rising sea levels (a direct consequence of climate change) is definitely a major cause for concern. Having been born and brought up in Mumbai, I have constantly felt concerned for the city's future considering the rampant reclamation of the sea for coastal projects, destruction of mangroves and the increasing population explosion. New research predicts that by 2070 Mumbai city will be completely submerged underwater and while city officials have started taking measures to prevent this potential event I wanted to take this project as an opportunity to visualise the future of Mumbai city 100 years from now and predict the city's transformation and survival based on possible calamities, technological advancements and potential for outer space migration.
Mumbai Transitions to Energy Efficient Systems

It's been a few years since the coastal roads and enhanced transportation system led to a population explosion in the city. With excessive strain on the cities resources and increased pollution, the city's air quality index is at an all time low. With diseases on the rise and resources depleting, the city slowly makes its transition to electric vehicles and solar powered energy efficient systems.

Cyclone Treo Visits Mumbai
Rampant reclamation of the sea & increased construction along the coast, reduced mangroves have been pushing the city closer to a disaster. And while the financial capital of India was already struggling with the effects of rising sea levels, the sudden arrival of cyclone Treo on a quiet Sunday morning wrecked complete havoc causing floods and landslides along the cities coastal areas. Buildings collapsed, infrastructures submerged and people displaced - the once resilient city was now starting to show signs of despair.

The City Adopts Climate Resistant Infrastructure
Having experienced the horrors of climate change and major destruction in the aftermath of cyclone Treo, city officials realised the importance of building climate resistant infrastructure. As with any calamity, the resilient city of Mumbai jumps right back to action. Architects and engineers work relentlessly to finally finally develop smart infrastructure that can self regulate and withstand extreme temperatures, storms, and earthquakes and the city finally starts getting back to fostering dreams.

Mumbai- First City to Leverage Marine Life for Energy, Food & Potable Water

The effects of climate change are felt with the city seeing record high temperatures. With potable water reserves at an all time low, the cost for food and drinking water reaches an all time high. Scientists work relentlessly to find a way to utilise the abundant supply of sea water & marine vegetation along the city's coast. Leveraging technology and deploying new infrastructure along the coast, scientists invent the worlds first energy efficient, smart food and water generation system that travels along the city's length in solar powered pods, sustainably enhancing sea water and marine life for human consumption. Each household, industry is assigned its own pod ensuring self sufficiency.

Mumbai Transitions To A Floating City
With almost 70% of Mumbai taken over by the sea as a result of the climate crisis and rising sea levels Mumbai is now officially a floating city. Environmentalists had already predicted this day decades ago. Having prepared for this very day years in advance the city's infrastructure and systems effectively transition to this new way of living. With new luxury floating homes and completely modes of water transport the city is nothing but thriving.

Mumbai Claims The Underwaters
With only limited space left for infrastructure expansions, the city had to explore other options. Taking inspiration from cities like Venice and New York, the city officials and engineers have been working on infrastructure to facilitate underwater living.
With the discovery of AIR 2.0, a device that facilitates oxygen generation from water, the dream of underwater living has already become quite tangible in the western European countries. Technology assisted devices now allow us to harness energy and nutrients from marine life sustainably which has helped ease this transition.

Early this April, the cities richest businessmen migrated to the luxury condo's of underwater Mumbai. A few more people are likely to follow suit.
